Farm Day 2005
| Organic Community Challenges Factory Dairy Farms |
 |
|
The challenge to renegade factory dairy farms is
gaining traction. Rule changes and a draft guidance
document adopted by the National Organic Standards
Board (NOSB) would eliminate loopholes allowing a
handful of factory dairy farms—some with over 5000
cows—to market milk labeled as organic while
confining their cows without pasture to small
drylots.
The action was spurred by The Cornucopia Institute's
filing of three formal complaints requesting a USDA
investigation into the lack of pasture at farms in
Colorado, Idaho, and California. Pasturing is the
cornerstone of organic livestock farming; it
improves animal health, protects and builds the
soil, creates wildlife habitat, and makes an ideal
filter system—important for our waterways.
And what cows eat affects their milk’s nutrition.
The Danish Institute of Agricultural Research
recently reported that organic milk—defined as
produced by pastured cows—is 50% higher in vitamin
E, 75% higher in omega-3 fatty acids, and 200%–
300%
higher in antioxidants than conventional milk.

| Guidelines To Increase The Use Of Local Foods At Meetings |
 |
|
Do you help plan events, meetings or
conferences?
Then you know, food is usually a big part of these
events. Attendees often remember the food, for
better or worse. In the few days that conferees
spend together, they can learn a great deal about an
area's agriculture, local cuisine and food customs,
and develop a lasting positive impression of the area.
West Wind Farms can provide its locally
produced meats and poultry in quantity for your next
event. West Wind Farms can also help you locate
other locally produced foods to round out the menu.
Why local foods?
- You will be promoting healthful, sustainable food
choices.
- Your meeting attendees will leave with a positive
impression of the regional distinctions.
- Reliance on seasonal, local food builds food
security by increasing markets for local products
and supporting local economic development.
- Communities that rely on local food supplies vote
with their dollars for a system of sustainable
practices that preserve the environment and
encourage local economic and social stability.
Many organizations and meeting planners find the
brochure by Gary L. Valen and Meredith R. Taylor,
"A Guide to Serving Local Food at Your Next Event"
http://glynwood.org/resource/articles/LocalFoods.pdf,
useful in planning events, while supporting local
businesses and farmers.
The "Guidelines to Increase Local Foods at
Meetings", produced by the Society for Nutrition
Education, is also helpful and may be found under
Resources and Relationships at the Society for
Nutrition Education's web site:
